Dear fellow agilist, The next community gathering takes the format of a very powerful meeting animation: the "World Café" (http://www.theworldcafe.com/).
The "World Café" is one of meeting techniques that we (agile
practitioners) are using for
- Retrospectives,
- Innovation and
- all kind of
collaborative stuff.
The idea behind this event is to share with you one of our "cool" tools
and have a lot of fun together.
So, to make this happen, the topic of this session is : " TEAM
DYSFUNCTIONS"
And like in Asterix and Obelix, the game ends with a drink.
Hope to see you there and have fun.
when : Tue, March 15, 18:30 – 20:30 (Copy the event to your agenda) Where : Brasserie SEPPL

There is a lot of buzz about Innovation Games and we are planning to create some more !

We
are meeting on 15 February from 18h30 at CRP Henri Tudor, 29 avenue
J.F. Kennedy to
- Learn what "Innovation Games" are,
- And prepare a future event called "Innovation Games",
- Using two games from the
book "Innovation Games - Creating Breakthrough Products Through
Collaborative Play" by Luke Hohmann:
- Product Box :
 - Buy a Feature :

The date of this future event "Innovation games" is not set so far.
The 15th of february, we will prepare for the event by discussing topics such as:
# Remember the Future - if the event had taken place, what did you learn from it?
# Product - what product should be chosen for the event such that it will be practical and meaningful to the event attendees?
#
Logistics - what materials need to be provided to the attendees to
build their product? What materials need to be at the event to provide
examples of products to the attendees?
# Roles - what roles are needed to have a successful event?
If you want to volunteer some of your time to help us prepare for the event 'Innovation games",
If you want to learn more about what innovation game is, and how to organize them,
If you want to meet passionnate and creative people,
Join us at the Centre de recherche Henri Tudor.

To start thinking to that, you can read this research publications from Australia (Daniel G. O Sheedy) : Preliminary Results of a Study of Agile Project Management Techniques for an SME Environment. You should know that there is so far only little research on PM for SMEs. And we all know that SMEs are struggling with the downsizing of big methodologies to tailor them to their needs. The research is meant to address IT project in SMEs, but "the interesting aspect of the doctoral work if this researcher was to use it for non-IT projects where a SME found conventional PM methodologies too heavy for them to use", according to Shankar Sankaran, professor at the Center for management and organization studies from the university of Sydney. And that shows that agility is really starting to go beyond IT ! Below is the abstract. The full paper is here. Abstract : In large organisations project management methods have been successfully implemented for IT projects. Small software teams have found these methods unwieldy for their situation however, and have thus developed agile software development methods. This paper presents the preliminary research findings of a study that involved an investigation of agile and traditional project management techniques adapted to an SME (Small and Medium-sized Enterprise) environment. The research was undertaken using a qualitative approach, implementing an action research methodology, over a ten-month period in an SME environment in Vienna, Austria. A framework was developed for the implementation of IT projects, using concepts derived from agile software development combined with traditional project management. This framework was then iteratively tested and refined over the course of the research. The research was designed specifically for IT projects in an SME environment, and was tested in a media and publishing industry setting. The results of this research provide a valuable tool for project managers who are operating in a fast-moving or rapidly changing environment. Laurent Vergnol. |

Access to thousands of games for agility. Metaphor is an important pattern in agile "processes" and games are offering a lot of metaphors on agility. Let's play serious games Have a look there : Agile Games |

Goal : to stay agile as far as possible (when you scale up, you may loose agility)
for discussion, see www.scalingsoftwareagility.wordpress.com
too much projects --> continuous content delivery
Master piece : the release train. value stream mapping (see mary poppendieck ) tools ? --> kanban
Agile PMO : coordinate, synchronize, consolidate, federate, motivate, foster. see www.apln.org
Separate the question of the PMO and the question of the portfolio.
Rôles classiques d'un PMO : see monique aubry and brian hobbs, quebec on the variety of the PMOs in the world.
The participants prefer to discuss the portfolio management topic.
Classical portfolio management : refer to the PMI event : 29 September 2009: Implementing Project Portfolio Management on www.pmi.lu
We've talk about what is Portfolio Management, It is very broad, it can be as simple as maintaining an Excel sheet with Projects list with simple Business Weight to complex Mathematical Models. A Portfolio Management is Strategic, it include Projects, Programs and anything which is strategic to the enterprise. A Project Portfolio can have a limit (Kanban?) based on capacity of the enterprise which ensure strategic priorities. Portfolio Management include basically the Selection, the Review, the Prioritizing and Categorization activities.
2 questions : Can you easily do a portfolio mgt with agile projects in it ? Can you manage your portfolio management in an agile way ?
At least 70-100 people in a company to implement such tools. or at least 50-70 projects .
It is important to find the right balance between short planning cycle and anticipation.
what simple tools can we easily set up ? --> Pierre Neis will provide us a list of tools. Real time measuring is important. Visual measuring is important.
do we have enough data to gather on the portfolio ? Are they reliable ? ... are the most important questions.
What is the duration of such a portfolio lifecycle? Typically it is a mid- to long-term process. Whereas agile projects are based on short planning cycles. So how can we combine both approaches? Other agile values are also important for an agile portfolio : don't be afraid to throw investment relative to your past strategy/portfolio. and what about the human value in an agile portfolio management ?
When you are already working in an agile way, it is more easy to change your strategy, because you have reached at any moment a clear value for your projects. so that you know what values are to be put in a trash if the strategy changes.
It is also easier with agile projects to change the portfolio more often because the project deliver actual value frequently, thus whenever you stop an agile project, some actual value has been realized. With agile projects in your portfolio you have more options to transform or stop projects without loosing completely the investment already made with those projects.
But for doing that, it is critical that agile projects comply with their "Definition of Done". Don't forget in that case to "stop starting stuff and to start finishing stuff." in your projects.
Limiting the WIP (Work In Progress) is key to achieve this.
is the topic related to the agile enterprise ?
What 's next ? --> to be defined see robot scrum on managingagile.blogspot.com

Dear Agilists,The Agile Interest Group Luxembourg Association has reached its first year. It is time now for the election of a new board. The board is composed of :
- Active members dedicated to various activities : events set up, press
release, networking and representation for Aiglu, website management
and news feed.
- "Legal" (and mandatory) members : - A president (and a vice-president
working actively with the president). Of course the president
has the first role in the association : he is representing aiglu in all
events. It is mainly a communication role. It is a tough role of course.
- A general secretary (and a vice
one working actively with the general secretary). The secretary has to organize the day to day association (organisation
and coordination of meetings, minutes, information gathering,
website...). It is also a tough role if one want the association to
survive.
- A treasurer (and a
vice one working actively with the treasurer).
We'd like to have two partners for one role, in order to keep the
motivation of our board members !
About the workload : you can consider that it will take you maximum 8 hours per month.
Of course, you have to add the time spent in aiglu's events (such as the
one along with the PMI), but you will probably spend this time anyway
if you are attending agile events. If your are interested in joigning the Association to promote and discuss Agility, or to vote for the board, or just to know what we are doing in Aiglu, please send us a mail (info@aiglu.org) or come to our next meeting : Election of the new boardThursday, 16th of september 2010, 18 pm to 20 pm Centre de recherche public Henri Tudor, 29 Boulevard Kennedy, Luxembourg Kirchberg Agile Interest Group Luxembourg EventsAgile Interest Group Luxembourg Events Centre de Recher Public Henri TudorGoogle Map The Agile Interest Group Luxembourg Association.
